A discount calculator finds the final price after a percentage discount, and the absolute amount you save. Whether you are shopping a sale, calculating a bulk-order discount for your business, or quickly working out a promotional offer, the math is simple but error-prone when done in your head.
Discount calculations also work in reverse — if you know the original price and the sale price, the discount percentage can be derived. This is useful for verifying whether an "advertised" 30% off really delivers 30% off, since unscrupulous retailers sometimes inflate the original price before applying the "discount".

Stacked discounts do NOT add up. A "20% off + extra 10% off" coupon is not 30% off — it is 20% + 10% of the remaining 80% = 28% off total. The order matters too: applying the larger discount first usually saves the same final amount, but stores sometimes apply the smaller one first to make the headline look better.
Discount is from the seller's side: a reduction off the listed price for the buyer. Margin is from the seller's side: their profit as a percentage of the selling price. A retailer with 50% margin can give a 30% discount and still make money; one with 15% margin cannot.
