GST / VAT Calculator — Add or Remove Tax

Calculate GST or VAT inclusive and exclusive prices with quick rate buttons (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%).

About this calculator

The GST (Goods and Services Tax) calculator helps businesses and individuals quickly calculate the tax amount on any product or service in India. GST replaced multiple indirect taxes in India in July 2017 and is now the primary indirect tax system covering almost all goods and services.

GST in India has five main rates: 0% (essential goods like fresh food, books), 5% (basic necessities), 12% (standard goods), 18% (most services and manufactured goods), and 28% (luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco). Knowing which rate applies to your product or service and being able to quickly calculate the tax amount is essential for business invoicing, pricing, and compliance.

CalcGlobe's GST calculator works in two modes — Add GST (calculate how much to charge the customer including tax) and Remove GST (find the base price when the GST-inclusive price is known). This is also useful for businesses in the UK (VAT at 20%), Australia (GST at 10%), and other countries.

Formula

\text{Add GST: } \text{Final} = \text{Base} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{Rate}}{100}\right)

  • Add GST — GST Amount = Base × Rate ÷ 100 · Final = Base + GST
  • Remove GST — Base = Final ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100) · GST = Final − Base

Worked example

Inputs: Product price (base): ₹1,000 · GST rate: 18%

  1. GST amount = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180
  2. Final price including GST = 1,000 + 180 = ₹1,180
  3. Reverse — if final is ₹1,180 at 18% GST:
  4. Original price = 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000
  5. GST = 1,180 − 1,000 = ₹180

Frequently asked questions

What is the GST rate on services?

Most services in India are taxed at 18% GST. This includes professional services, IT services, consulting, banking fees, and most service-sector businesses. Some services have special rates — restaurants charge 5% GST (without ITC), insurance premiums are at 18%, and healthcare and educational services are exempt (0%).

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

GST in India is split into components. For transactions within the same state, the total GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For example 18% GST on an intra-state sale = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For transactions between different states, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate — so 18% IGST on inter-state sales. The split is handled automatically in accounting — what matters for pricing is the total GST rate.

Is GST applicable on exports?

No — exports from India are zero-rated under GST, meaning 0% GST applies. Exporters can also claim refunds on input GST paid on materials used for exported goods. This makes Indian exports competitive in international markets.

What is the GST registration threshold?

Businesses with annual turnover above ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for service providers, ₹10 lakhs in special category states) must register for GST. Businesses below this threshold may voluntarily register to claim input tax credit, allowing them to offset GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales.
