A flooring calculator estimates the total area to be covered with flooring material (laminate, hardwood, vinyl, marble, granite) and the number of planks, tiles, or slabs needed including wastage. Different flooring materials have different wastage factors based on installation method and plank size.
Laminate and vinyl planks typically waste 5–8% because of staggered joints and end cuts. Hardwood waste 8–12%. Natural stone slabs (marble, granite) waste 10–15% because of vein matching, edge cuts, and breakages during handling. Always buy from a single dye lot for laminates and a single block for stone.

For long narrow rooms, lay planks lengthwise (parallel to the long wall) to visually elongate the room. For square rooms, lay planks parallel to the dominant light source (usually perpendicular to the largest window). In multi-room installations, run planks in a continuous direction through doorways for a flowing, more spacious feel.
For floating laminate and engineered wood floors: yes, always — underlay provides moisture protection, sound damping, and minor subfloor levelling. Choose 2 mm foam underlay for budget installations or 3–5 mm cork or rubber for premium acoustic performance. For glued-down or nailed-down hardwood: no underlay; the floor is bonded directly to the subfloor.
