Blood Pressure Reference — AHA 2017 Guidelines

Blood pressure categories per AHA/ACC 2017 guidelines with recommended actions.

About this calculator

A blood pressure reference chart classifies adult BP readings into Normal, Elevated, Stage 1 Hypertension, and Stage 2 Hypertension per the 2017 AHA/ACC guidelines (which lowered the threshold for "high blood pressure" from 140/90 to 130/80 mmHg). This is the most current and widely adopted classification system in evidence-based medicine.

Blood pressure should be measured with a properly sized cuff, after 5 minutes of seated rest, with the arm supported at heart level, on at least two separate occasions before diagnosing hypertension. A single high reading in a clinic (white-coat hypertension) is common and not diagnostic alone.

Worked example

Inputs: AHA 2017 classification of adult blood pressure

  1. Normal: SBP < 120 AND DBP < 80
  2. Elevated: SBP 120–129 AND DBP < 80
  3. Stage 1 Hypertension: SBP 130–139 OR DBP 80–89
  4. Stage 2 Hypertension: SBP ≥ 140 OR DBP ≥ 90
  5. Hypertensive Crisis: SBP > 180 AND/OR DBP > 120 — immediate medical evaluation

Frequently asked questions

How often should I measure my BP?

For a healthy adult under 40 with no risk factors: at least every 2 years. For adults 40+ or with risk factors (family history, obesity, diabetes): annually. For patients on antihypertensive medication: weekly at home with a validated upper-arm device, plus medical review every 3–6 months. Avoid wrist devices — they are systematically less accurate than upper-arm cuffs.

What is white-coat hypertension?

High BP readings only in clinical settings, with normal readings at home or on 24-hour ambulatory monitoring. Affects 15–30% of patients diagnosed with hypertension on office readings alone. Modern best practice is to confirm any new hypertension diagnosis with home or ambulatory monitoring before starting lifelong medication — saves both unnecessary side effects and healthcare costs.
